Strange School History...

In the 1960s, the west side of Kenosha was growing. A proposal was made to the School Board for the construction of a new elementary school. The proposal passed and the new school was targeted to open in January of 1965.

By 1961, Wilson and McKinley Elementary schools were so crowded that they had to add portable classrooms and the public demanded that the new school be built sooner than planned.

Construction of the school began in May of 1963. One year later, students and staff moved into the building. Everyone celebrated the opening of the new modern building with it's fashionable sunken library, well equipped gym, and fan shaped auditorium.

Needing a name for the new school, the School Board began reviewing their choices. The Kenosha School Board names schools after people who have shown outstanding community leadership.

Mr. Curtis Strange came to Kenosha in 1920. He served as principal of Bain and Weiskopf Elementary Schools from 1930 through 1943. Weiskopf school was on Sheridan Road and 50th Street in the building that now houses Connie's Daycare. In 1943, Mr. Strange became principal of McKinley Junior High School where he served until his death in 1953. Mr. Strange was very active in the community and served as the president of Kenosha Family Services and as chairman of the Kenosha Safety Council for many years.

The School Board named the school Curtis Strange Elementary and on May 6, 1964, Curtis Strange Elementary School was dedicated. Mrs. Curtis (Letha) Strange was the honored guest at the ceremony.

In the early 1970s, the area around Curtis Strange grew quickly. Many single family homes and small apartment complexes were being built; the school was crowded again. The School Board proposed adding classroom space to the building. The proposal passed and an 8 classroom wing was added onto the southwest corner of the original building. Curtis Strange Elementary was rewired in the late 1990s to accommodate technology used in the labs and classrooms.

Today Curtis Strange is a wonderful neighborhood school that provides students, parents, and staff with a exciting learning environment.
