Our Classroom Expectations
We have three rules that we follow in our classroom: Be Kind, Be Safe, and Listen Well. Our entire school uses a “clip system” to monitor the classroom. Each student has a clothespin (clip) that starts on green. If a student misbehaves, they move their clip to yellow. I usually give several warnings before a clip has to be moved. I tell them the yellow is the thinking star. There are no consequences here because everyone makes mistakes and we need to remember to think about our choices. If they continue to misbehave, their clip will be moved to orange. Here they need to sit in time out for 4 or 5 minutes (depending on their age). After that time the child and I discuss what happened and we move on. If a child needs to move their clip to red, they will sit in time out again and I will contact a family member either in person or by phone.
There is a monthly behavior incentive program set up school wide. Each child starts the month with 100 points. Each clip move minuses one point (yellow = 1, orange = 2, red = 3). At the end of the month, if they still have 90 or more points left, they will receive the incentive for that month. Some examples of the incentives have been necklaces, pencils, extra recess, ice cream, and assemblies.
